Wellington
25/11/97

What a difference a day makes. Or two or three in this case. Wellington has got me ready to hit the road again, largely thanks to the efforts of some old friends who live just north of the city. With a bed to sleep in, a fridge to nibble from, and a sofa to relax on, the past three days have proved the perfect remedy to a week's miserable cycling.

Yesterday, I took the bike into town--exercise and a little sightseeing. What a joy to put in 50k unburdened by B.O.B. and its heavy cargo. The long climb out of Johnsonville and into Karori was grueling, sure, but almost pleasant knowing how much worse it could have been were I fully loaded. The headwind and climb heading home were wretched, yes, but nothing, really, compared to what might have been.

Did a little shopping, too. This town has no shortage of outdoor gear suppliers. In addition, New Zealand produces some admirable gear. Macpac, a kiwi brand, supplies packs, tents, sleeping bags, and clothing, all of it of quite high caliber. I purchased a Macpac fleece cap (pronounced "very smart" by my host's mum), and a pair of polypro long johns, preparation for possible chilly times on the south island. I would love to get my hands on a Macpac pack--they make a few cycling-specific models I'd love to test--but I really can't justify the expense or the added weight. Still, they sure are nice...

My chain is now lubed with Ice Wax, a new dry lubricant from the good folks at Pedro's, long known for their environmentally friendly and slightly offbeat approach to bicycle care products. As far a yesterday's ride is concerned, I have no complaints. The true test, however, will come with the added stress of a B.O.B.-ful of gear and the wet climate of the South Island's west coast. I took the product with me--untested--on the strength of Pedro's reputation, and I'd be surprised if the product proved ineffective.

Tomorrow at 9.30 am I leave the comforts of home, board the ferry south, and begin to explore the South Island. I hope to get in some sea kayaking, off-road riding (collar bone permitting), and hiking in my five weeks down South. Maybe I'll even find a computer down there somewhere...
